I worked at Payless ShoeSource full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Great personal time, vacation time, sick time accumulation...at least when I was there.

    Cons

Has lost sight of the customer base that made them a success in the 90s and early 2000s. Set sights on customer that really was never theirs. Extremely high customer satisfaction survey result demands. There is such a thing as too much training and coaching. Upper management had focused on customer service results in spite of real customer demands. The company that created the self-service shoe experience has become too in-your-face.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Search the history of the company to see where success existed in the past. Trust that the managers you have put in place to run their store, especially the more experienced ones, know what they are doing. Projections and expectations are fine, but be realistic as you climb back up the ladder. You have/had talent in the stores that do understand the business. Let them focus on making your stores a success a little more and spend a little less time with the Smiles book. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing.
