Former Employee - Peace Corps Volunteer  in  Ashgabat (Turkmenistan)
Former Employee - Peace Corps Volunteer in Ashgabat (Turkmenistan)

I worked at Peace Corps full-time for more than a year

Pros

See the world from the perspective of a different culture. Learn a new language. Get to take control of your job and responsibilities. Learn to be truly independent and how to deal with situations you might not otherwise encounter. 24/7 access to call a Peace Corps doctor for health concerns.

Cons

Culture Shock and cross cultural misunderstandings. A feeling of isolation at times. Getting used to new food at first. Doing laundry by hand and dealing with third world hygiene beliefs.

Amazing training, great health care, good support, but best when left to do my own in the field

I have been working at Peace Corps full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I had incredible language and cultural training from the Peace Corps at the start of my service. The work as a volunteer changed my life forever as I was able to immerse myself into another culture as a teacher and do great things for the local community

    Cons

Incredibly bureaucratic , things are slow and once I was in the field I felt their presence in my life was more a detriment to my service than a help.

I have been working at Peace Corps full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I would say that the biggest pros about working with the Peace Corps were that it was a great experience, the training was very thorough, there was international travel, and the benefits were great.

    Cons

The pay was not very high, although that's to be expected and not many people who join the peace corps need a large salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Provide more programmatic support.
