I have been working at Peet's

Pros

-causual environment
-good people/good intentions
-good work location for corporate office
-great products
-employees very passionate about products
-environmentally conscious
-cult following of products
-committment to quality a competitive advantage
-daily flexibility, not a rigid start and stop time on a daily basis
-very fair business practices in terms of dealing with coffee of origin areas around the world

Cons

-benefits pacakage not up to industry standards in some areas
-very few holidays and vacation time
-extremely weak IT infrastructure and as a result lots of work to manage, massage, and get data almost all based in excel and no integrated IT systems
-decisions and culture feels very reactive and tactical in nature. Very little proactive and organized approach to problem solving.
-Internal communication is inefficient and leads to micromanaging behaviors and low morale.
-huge opportunity to work smarter not harder, also an opportunity to quit throwing headcount at problems and instead problem solve through process improvements.
-Opportunity to better define role clarity amongst teams, also for the individuals within teams, and to define basic process improvements in handoffs. The company is too big to operate as a tribe. It is a place where if you are capable and available you become the owner of a task or process regardless of whether or not is makes long term or present term sense within the scope of your current job title and job scope.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Doing some simple process improvements around internal communications and role clarity would greatly improve morale and would be low hanging fruit. The employees are loyal and really desire to work at Peet's. They love Peet's and they love what the company stands for and represents.

Current Employee - Retail Sales and Barista in Concord, CA

I have been working at Peet's

    Pros

The extensive coffee and tea knowledge is really something that you can keep with you forever. You become an expert in barista skills (and unfortunately will be harshly judging other's skills at every coffee shop you visit for the rest of your life).

    Cons

If you don't have a completely open availability, they will not try to accommodate your schedule in any way. Raises are insignificant or nonexistent, even after working there and being a loyal employee for 2+ years, you're lucky to get a 10 cent raise. For all the hard work they have us doing on a daily basis, the pay is hardly worth it.
