Pros

There are often free pretzels. If you like an hourly, no take home work kind of job, it's a good place. Good commute if you don't want to go into Philly. Cafeteria and small gym in the building. It is not high pressure at all, there is very little stress. Nice people that talk and eat a lot.

Cons

Management and associates have no decision making power, its only made at the very top. The executives are so out of touch with reality, yet they keep pretending they care, keep making bad decisions - especially about the IT projects that are needed. They do what salespeople want only, not the actual company needs. Ethics are questionable. No HR department to speak of tells you something. Lots of meetings, very little innovation or productivity. There are no metrics, nobody is really measured on their jobs, so its frustrating if you are 30 something looking to actually advance/learn/get recognized for real results.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

You really need a head of Human Resources to understand attracting, management and retaining talent. Youre corporate communications are terrible - get a new writer that understands people. Theres a lot of inequity - hard workers get a paper certificate award, while inept workers get the same 1% raise as everyone else. People at the lower levels have really good ideas - ask for them.

Stable company, slow to progress with technology, good benefits but poorly paid employees.

I have been working at Penn Mutual full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Stable company. Does not over hire and is not a publicly traded company answering to shareholders. Very good life insurance and annuity products. Large enough to be a player in the industry, small enough to listen to their employees. Good benefit package for employees.

    Cons

Pathetic pay and pay increases. Very behind the times in technology and many practices. Over worked and greatly under appreciated back office staff. The headquarters in Horsham are in the middle of no place. Small player in the financial services world and no clear vision on how to expand.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Life insurance may be your bread and butter but the financial services can be the peanut butter and jelly if you would just make an honest effort to improve the offerings. You need to start bringing the pay of your employees up to par with the rest of the world. The pay of employees is pathetic. If you are serious about keeping the talent you have, you need to pay them like you want them to stay. At this point, Penn Mutual is a good place to gain experience before you move on to a place that will offer advancement and wages that are up to par with the rest of the industry.
