Current Employee - Graduate Research Assistant in State College, PA

Pros

Penn State is a very large school, so there is a ton of opportunity for research and funding. For the most part, any class you have interest in is going to be offered, even if it may not be exactly in your department. Most of the professors I have interacted with are very nice and helpful.

Cons

Like all universities, it is very research driven, often at the expense of teaching quality. That is not to say that the professors are poor instructors, it is just quite apparent that research is the first priority.

    Pros

Very relaxed atmosphere. The best job you can get as a student (Information Technology Services). Flexible schedule.

    Cons

A lot of your fellow employees are real dumb and hinder you because of it. Managers are nice however don't take neccessary steps to forward the organization or weed out the idiots.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire the idiots, stop being so dumb.

    Pros

Amazing upper level administrators avail themselves to mentor young professionals. Take advantage of the educational benefits. Take advantage of opportunities across the college.

    Cons

I often wish I could pick up Penn State and move it out of Central PA.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to support programs that allow underrepresented faculty and staff to advance.
