    I worked at Penson Worldwide

    Pros

Very friendly environment, in all departments but one (software dev) work is set up efficiently, people pulling together in the right direction

    Cons

Software is mostly outsourced locally and abroad, developers are trying to glue various pieces together, unrealistic work plans, no clear reqs provided to the outsource team, developers work a lot of hours accomplishing very little due to overcomplicated and inefficient procedures

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a good Development VP, re-organize the whole department. "Work more hours" can't be a permanent answer to all issues.

Well intentioned, but communication and lack of strategy are sorely missing

I have been working at Penson Worldwide

    Pros

The people, including management. Penson does a good job of hiring people that share the core values of the firm.

    Cons

Lack of clear corporate goals, or a strategy to achieve them. This can, and has, led to much confusion about company priorities, and what you should be working on at any given time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pick a couple of clear, defined 1/3/5 year goals, create a plan for how to get there (hopefully after soliciting feedback from employees), and COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE it. Measure and report on progress often. Employees need to feel a sense of progress and accomplishment, and that is not happening today.
