I have been working at Pepperdine University full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, overall good people to work with, locations is nice, all the exciting things that come with a college like the athletics or other events. Also, the ability to do projects that work with all aspects of the community.

    Cons

Management seems to be narrow and not like conflict. Also, they look out for their friends more then the employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    I worked at Pepperdine University

    Pros

Location, nice people, non-IT departments are good, students are friendly

    Cons

Management in IT - a few don't enough experience to know even the simplest best practices, and they are only out for themselves and cannot deal with conflicts that arise. What's worse, they fancy themselves good at their jobs. Terrible combo. Be careful, if you complain about them they may retaliate. They can be unethical as well. That said, there are like two who are good at their jobs.

IT is a police state - The information security group has overriding power to shut down your project on grounds of "security" instead of being an advisory group and helping you out.

Too political - it's a good ol' boys club, and you're either in it or you're not. Questioning or having a disagreement with management is a death sentence for your career. You can't trust anyone, and you can't even really be friends with anyone. They will try to intimidate you to get you to toe the line.

Don't keep up with upgrades - your pertinent skills will atrophy and it will be hard to find a job elsewhere.

Pay is WAY below industry averages (unless you're high up) - They'll try to tell you that you're well paid though

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Funny how all of the marginal to negative reviews on here are about the IT department. Funny also, how I can't disagree. Don't work for IT. My advice to management in IT is to learn how to manage. You get paid over twice what most your underlings make, earn your keep.

And beware of nepotism, you shouldn't allow it here.
