A terrible job, working with really great people.

I worked at Pet Food Express

Pros

Fantastic co-workers, great store employee training, lots of charitable donations to animal shelters and rescues, fun customers & pets, "bullet proof vests for working dog" fundraiser, you'll make great friends & learn a lot at the store level. Pet insurance is offered as one of the benefits.

Cons

Management lacks direction. Low pay, low employee appreciation, employee suggestions and concerns are disregarded. The crazy "5th" payroll period makes shoestring budgeting impossible! Whether or not a conscious decision, they function in the outdated management style of creating adversarial situations, believing that the warring parties will try to out perform each other.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow up. You're not a mom & pop anymore. Stop micro-managing. Pay attention to your employees: they have a current perspective, something you've lost. Start a quarterly corporate job switch day for corporate employees to work in the warehouse or stores, and store employees to help in the office or warehouse. It builds appreciation, understanding, and teamwork. Promote cross-training. HIRE AN ORGANIZATIONAL CONSULTANT WITH EXPERIENCE IN RETAIL COMPANIES. Restructure the corporate jobs, titles, and duties to something a little more normal. Realize that it's not his job or her job, but things that have to be done for the benefit of the company. Treat each other respectfully, and it will trickle down. Chaos always comes from the top. Get some therapy.

I worked at Pet Food Express

    Pros

They have high standards for their products and customer service. It is a fun place to work if you enjoy being around animals.

    Cons

There is pressure to fill in at other stores. There is too much insistence on introspection which can lead to arbitrary and less than objective reviews.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It looks like the competition is beginning to copy PFE's customer service and holistic approach. In the end what may set PFE apart is your integrity - which in employee relations was allowed to slip recently. I would think long and hard before throwing loyal employees under the bus. Destroying lives is beneath you.

I have been working at Pet Food Express full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The people are wonderful and everyone has the same goal: to improve the lives of animals. Countless times, employees help rescue pets from bad situations, go out of there way to deliver products to needed customers, and corporate gives money to rescue organizations or individuals in bad situations. Employees who have had a family tragedy have been given nothing but support and all the (unpaid) time off needed.

    Cons

Promotions happen at a good rate at the store level but not at the corporate level. Unless you are an outsider getting hired in, your pay rate will be much lower than average.
