Current Employee - Hourly Manager

I have been working at PetSmart full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

Fun to work with animals. Good benefits for full time employees.

Cons

Hourly managers work twice as hard for half the money of the salaried management. Seems like they love to hire from outside instead of promoting from within. I have worked there for over 4 years and have been passed up for promotion time and time again so they could hire someone less qualified from outside the company. Horrible schedule unless you are store manager.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote from within. If you cannot promote from within your store managers and district managers are not performing as they should. Lip service does nothing to help pay someones bills.

    Pros

It's fun to work with animals and the people that work there are generally nice.

    Cons

Management could improve and benefits could be provided.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiring new employees rather than recognize and appreciate long term employees.

I worked at PetSmart part-time for less than a year

    Pros

learning about/ handling MOST of the animals

    Cons

low pay, variable hours, annoying customers, frequently scheduled to work in dept. alone (basically getting paid barely above min. wage to do the work of 2-3 people and expected to give excellent customer service at the same time), hamsters

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

start petcare/specialty out at a higher rate. the amount of physical labor required (weekly bedding changes/ scrubbing tanks/ feeding+ watering all animals in store/ administering medications etc...) to do the job on top of having to learn about not only all the animals in the store plus the products/habitats for them as well is way too much for min. wage and crappy hours.
