Pros

• Lots of opportunity for career growth • Good pay for managers • Great structure overall for measuring results • Near recession-proof business, growing while others are closing stores • Lots of emphasis on developing leadership Overall the pros definitely outweigh the cons if you are up for the challenges of a highly competitive workplace. If you are sharp, on your game, highly organized and can walk and chew gum (and juggle) at the same time, you can realize great success here. The weak need not apply.

Cons

• Relatively low pay for hourly associates makes it challenging to retain top talent at that level • Top-heavy with corporate management positions creating too many "new initiatives" every month it seems - makes it hard to focus on basics of day to day operations. • Lean labor model makes Wall Street happy but puts a lot of work on store and field managers - makes work-life balance very challenging.

Advice to Management

While I understand the need to constantly evolve to stay on top, there is a point of diminishing returns. There are so many new messages, checklists, random tasks and P&P changes every month that to do it all properly the store manager ends up in the office all day, unable to be out there leading. Leave time in the day for all the unexpected things that managers deal with every single day (associate and customer issues, call-outs, pet issues, coaching of underperforming associates and the time it takes to review, interview, hire, on-board and train new associates - seems that there is no labor allocated for that). Do a time study in a busy store to see how long it takes to really get it all done with all the unexpected things that happen every day. Give us some labor back from what has been taken lately. Keep investing in leadership - that is the best thing about this company. I love the principles and values the company stands for and operates on but less critical tasks get in the way. Cut back or give more labor so managers can realize work-life balance.
