Pros

I love animals, so that made it a great place to work. Obviously if you do not like handling/ interacting with animals, this is not the job for you. If you love them though you will love this job. They are very fair with pay and employees receive regular raises. The training is good and customers are generally really nice. The store tends to attract animal lovers (obviously) as customers who are generally friendly and love talking about their pets and shopping in a pet friendly environment. The training is good and there are opportunities to move to different departments and "up" if you want. The company is also good at promoting good values and supporting charity.

Cons

While it is great for a retail environment, it is still retail. You will have cranky customers occasionally (though less then most places). Like any retail, this is probably not a place to make a career but it is great if you like me just need a firs time job in high school (although now I think you need to be 18) or are looking for work while going through college. There are opportunities to go into dog training or grooming with the company's help with training through if you are looking for more of a carrier position.

Advice to Management

Less favoritism in promoting

    Pros

Time goes by very quickly, pays well, friendly atmosphere, ability to be cross-trained

    Cons

Office politics, either you go to groomer's school (which has a 2 year commitment with the company that incurs a fine if you back out of contract) or you're out, hard to get full-time hours, conflict between commissioned groomers and noncommisioned bathers when it comes to dividing additional tasks, open door policy is hit and miss

    Advice to Management

Listen to noncommisioned workers, do not give employees who have violated policy in dangerous ways multiple chances, need to rethink equipment used in salons

    Pros

This is generally a fun work environment as a pet care associate. You spend early morning and late evening hours tending to the fish, bird, reptiles and rodents, as well as "recovering" the aisles (making the shelves look nice). The time in between early morning and late evening is spent assisting customers. You are always on the move. If you're naturally outgoing you'll have a great time meeting new people; pets are an easy subject to bond over. If you're more reserved, you may not get into many heart-to-hearts with strangers, but it's still easy to have a good time discussing your pet experiences and listening to customers' stories.

    Cons

The pay is pretty low. If you have little or no related work experience, you may start out as low as $7.50/hr. If you have related work experience your hiring manager may take you on for a little more, but don't expect much. There's no way to increase your income through commission or tips. If you're part time, your hours will probably change wildly week to week...I've worked as little as 15 hours a week and as much as 33 hours while part time. Also, if you're a pet-savvy associate, it can be frustrating if your managers keep hiring people who know nothing about any of the animals. As a pet care associate, sadly you see a lot of dead pets. The company does pay vet bills to take sick pets to the vet, but you're guaranteed at least a few days at work crying over something that died.

    Advice to Management

Put more time into hiring people with actual reptile/fish/bird/rodent experience before sending them over to pet care. People need to know more than what is in the petsmart care guides.
