Former Employee - Dog Trainer/ Sales Associate in Colorado Springs, CO
Former Employee - Dog Trainer/ Sales Associate in Colorado Springs, CO

I worked at Petco

Pros

The job can be fun if you enjoy animals and a fast paced enviornment. You received paid training to learn about animal caretaking, animal products, and customer care.

Cons

Not enough employees/ high enough payroll to get everything done. Employees are often scrambling to complete tasks by there deadline. Often only 2 or 3 people will run the entire store, creating a stressful enviornment. Special services such as grooming and dog training are pushed to the back burner, so people hired to perform dog training or another service spendthe majority of their time on other projects. Scheduling was done at the last minute and shifts were often back to back i.e. close --open next morning.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

To listen better to employee's concerns and to find a way to have more employees on the floor at the same time.

I have been working at Petco

    Pros

There is great exposure on a corporate level. As a Marketing Data Analyst you work cross-functionally with many departments such as Marketing, Advertising, Visual, Accounting, and of course Merchandising.

    Cons

There is no defined career development plan in place. Unless you know someone in another department, don't plan on receiving any communication regarding advancement in other areas. The systems are also a huge issue. It seems as if PETCO is stuck in the past with it's computer systems. All of the data can also be overwhelming. It seems as if there is often too much time spent on data versus actually analyzing trends and other issues affecting the business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Spend some money on the technical process of the job.

    I worked at Petco

    Pros

Petco has opportunites for growth if you are patient and have a manager willing to go to bat for you. It also can be a very fun place to work- like all retail stores, it all depends on your team of management and coworkers. There is a lot of work to be done, and if you work hard it's easy to stand out.

    Cons

Too much politics. The district manager pins general managers on one another, so every store secretly hates all the others. The district manager says one thing and does another. I've worked for many retail companies and would still be at Petco if it weren't for the district manager, she's very untrustworthy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't ingnore hotline calls, it's there for a reason and I've heard a district manager say she "doesn't pay attention to those things"
