Cons

Insane expectations at times Long hours at times for corporate visits-obnoxious Bullying and sometimes intimidating general managers Anti- pursuing education if you're an ASM or higher Some general managers expect you to break your back when they are hardly in their own stores sometimes

Advice to Management

Do not allow your General Managers to be bullies or over pressure or over work their team. Be fairer in expectations

I have been working at Petco part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Extremely flexible with job positions and hours depending on your GM and ASM. If you love pets and are in a store with a good manager it can be a great place to work. There is a wide variety of ages and backgrounds with your co-workers. If you have pets the employee discount is nice to have. Full time benefits are really good.

    Cons

They pay as a manager depends on how good of a negotiator you are and what kind of back ground you have. Often the people who have worked the longest for the company and have risen from the ranks are paid the least because of Petco's low starting wages.

    Advice to Management

If you want the most out of your employees give them the best pay, training and support possible. Low wages, continuously getting the schedule out late, and not having people do the actual jobs they are hired to do hurts moral and eventually sales.

I have been working at Petco full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

If you're really interested, and show potential, their are usually lots of opportunities for advancement under assistant manager.

    Cons

Once you are ready to advance to assistant manger (and then perhaps on to general manager), there really aren't that many opportunities. If you think about it, someone else has to either quite, move, or die, or a new store open up somewhere in your district, in or to get promoted from lower management. Also, they're not too great with pay raises, but then, in retail, who is now a days? I've worked for the company for 7 years, and I've only gone up by $3! My pay raise from associate to one of the lower manager positions was only 50 cents.

    Advice to Management

If a particular employee is really showing they're worth more, give them what they're worth, regardless of wether or not it's "review and pay raise" time. There's no better way to loose a good/great employee then to under value (pay) them.
