I worked at Petco part-time

Pros

- Decent discount
- Reasonably flexible scheduling for those with families, other jobs, or school
- Carries more natural nutrition than Petsmart, like Natural Balance, Solid Gold, and Merrick

Cons

- Hostile work environment caused by incompetent managers
- Some policies aren't very customer friendly, like not matching our website prices or having disjointed rewards program,so there's a lot of unhappy customers
- Animals are kept in poor conditions, especially fish. Animals don't get quarantined to reduce stress after shipping, just shoved right on the floor where people tap on the glass and shout at them. They don't get much other human interaction and as a result are very unfriendly towards people. Animals only get taken to the vet one day out of the week.
- Very poor training, don't have to be certified in a department before management shoves you into it. Had coworkers tell customers 3-4 goldfish would be fine for a 10g tank.
- Hours drastically cut halfway into the fiscal year, so not only are you making less money, you're severely understaffed during the busiest most lucrative part of the year.
- Store and district management don't discipline managers and let them get away with anything, but nitpick sales associates over everything.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

There's a million reasons why Petsmart makes double in revenue what Petco does in a year despite Petco having a twenty year jumpstart. Petsmart in general has lower prices for the same product, has a better focus on services including veterinary services, boarding, and day care. They have much stronger signage and a more cohesive store layout instead of products being scattered about the store. They have their own line of pet food which pulls in an additional hundreds of millions per year (Authority and Simply Nourish, plus small animal and bird food). Petco needs to stop focusing on one-time-purchase hardgoods and apparel and instead focus on small repeat purchases like food. Petsmart is publicly traded and while I doubt Petco is in the financial situation to sell stock, it should be a goal for the next 4-5 years. For now, stop opening new stores. Instead pilot programs in California with new registers, stronger signage, and more departmentalized store layout. If you don't change these things and make steps to have them put in place in all stores within 7-8 years, Petco will not exist in 2024.

I worked at Petco full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

hourly pay if no dogs although its LOWER than what the cashiers make out in the store and they still expect you to be a cashier when you have no dogs..

    Cons

ALOT. management doesnt do much in keeping order or making people do stuff, i saw countless times were someone should have been written up (poor care of animals) and never was. lower management gets away with just about everything! especially treating other people like there nothing and talking about them to other employees behind there back. prices are crazy high, and there all about the "numbers" not the care and welfare of the animals

Has potential if the upper management would take advice from the people on the front lines

I worked at Petco full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fun environment, good co-workers. Plenty of opportunities to learn new skills.

    Cons

Upper management relies on their "team of experts" to make decisions regarding the animals in the store. They are not willing to listen to the people who know what they are doing and interact with the customers and the animals on a regular basis.
