Former Employee - Multiple in Bothell, WA

I worked at Philips Healthcare full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Easy Workload
Products you can support
Nice Campus
Work life Balance

Cons

No clear Goals,
Pretend to get better but just shuffle things around
Poor design quality
management is completely disconnected
When you get promoted they have corporate rules against paying you your market value
No formal development plans
underpay the good employee's
Retirement home for lazy people who just get by, their best talent, stays for a year or two then leaves

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Clear chain of responsibility, develop transparent metrics, there are so many exceptions in every metric you report that you basically hide the truth in order to pat yourself on the back.

When promoting from within, pay your employees accordingly otherwise they will get a year of experience and leave in order to get back to market wage. All you have left are people that want to retire with the company and are hardly competent. Especially in Sr management and director level positions at the Bothell site.

    Pros

A chance to design the very best medical equipment with fantastic co-workers. Mostly good managers.

    Cons

Typical large company management, a bit slow to make decisions, with lots of turnover at all levels. They are often out of touch with the worker bees. Lots of changes to long term plans.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to the engineers, not just the mid-level managers. Take the time to get to know them, help them feel like they are an important part of a great team, and they will perform beyond expectations.

I worked at Philips Healthcare full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, amazing potential, great place to gain experience and skill sets that can be applied elsewhere. You actually work with products that save and improve the quality of lives worldwide. There are still a number of intelligent and incredible coworkers (who do care) that you can collaborate with. If you are lucky to work for a solid manager, you can really excel. Facility in Andover is world class.

    Cons

One of the most political companies around. If you voice any concerns or challenge management, you're gone. If your manager or his/her boss doesn't like you, look for another job FAST. It doesn't matter the quality of your output, but who you know. Employees are scared to voice there true feelings and opinions. A number of high quality employees continue to leave simply because they are not treated with respect from managers/directors/executives who are nothing but "corporate-bullies".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Redefine what "Accelerate" means and get back to innovating. Otherwise, you will continue to lose market share, employees and credibility. There are a number of Directors, General Managers, and VPs who manage their staff with fear and spend all of their time managing up at the expense of the business. Put back the "Human" in Human Resources. Listen to your employees at Level 70 and below, they don’t trust management and are scared of losing their jobs. You have so much potential but continue to screw-up!
