I worked at Phoenix House

Pros

Strong sense of mission. Dozens of caring individuals manage a complex set of programs. Good career training when people choose to take it, including tuition reimbursement.

Cons

Suffers many of the problems endemic to the field: early burnout, crushing paperwork, colleagues relapsing or exhibiting stress, too little focus on dual disorder

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase salaries, attract more qualified people, use social workers in preference to substance abuse counselors, pay attention to people issues.

Frustrating. Communication was poor, and what the rule was one day could be completely different a week later.

    I worked at Phoenix House

    Pros

The clients need smart and compassionate people to assist them. Some residents were truly grateful for the counselor's hard work and dedication in helping them to get back on their feet. Watching as some of the residents grew emotionally and as people was a good feeling knowing that you were part of that process.

    Cons

Many residents were at PH because they had no where else to go and being at PH was better than living on the street or being in jail. This type of resident cared little if at all about the rules, and they spent their day seeing how much they could get away with before being caught. They wern't serious about getting help and because of that they created chaos and made it extremely difficult for those who earnestly wanted help. It was like a f/t baby sitting job only too much of your time had to be dedicated to imputing endless amounts of data. There was never enough time to get all the many responsibilities of the job done. The clients need the counselor's time (24/7), but the counselor has much too much to do and is constantly being pulled in a thousand different directions. At the end of every day, I felt drained and exhausted, and even though I ran my ass off all day every day it seemed like so little ever got accomplished.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management spent a great deal of money on software called 'Welligent.' This software is used by counselors not by computer techs, but you need to be a computer science whiz rather than a counselor to understand it and use it. Welligent is a nightmare. Let counselors counsel and technicians put in data, otherwise forget about counselors all together and just input data. Counselors don't get to do the most important part of their job-being with and working with the residents-No, counselors are too busy stuck behind computers most of the day imputing data. Maybe it looks nice, but it doesn't get the job done. It's sad.
