I have been working at Physical Optics full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

I've been working for this company for more than 10 years. The company has grown from less than 100 employees to over 200 employees now. This gradual increase in employees should speak volumes about this company, specifically, when most of companies have been reducing workforce during this period. It should certainly speak louder than those former POC employees who have expressed their biased opinions. The company is transitioning from mostly SBIR driven company to a commercial avionics business. The management structure demands a lot from the employees as they should considering the level of competition in the industry. They have mostly been able to avoid any sizable layoffs. They are also conservative and compensate employees well. Most of people that had worked for a much bigger company come to POC expecting a 'big' company management style. They will need to adjust their ways and put forward effort and dedication. They often cannot adjust and end up blaming the company.
I believe the company will grow steadily as they have from its inception. The company has brilliant managers and engineers. They make POC one of the most agile, customer demand driven company that will meet the needs of the military. If you are willing to work hard in a fast paced high-tech military research and development environment, you might find yourself successful in POC.

Cons

Since the company is the midst of transitioning from mainly a SBIR company to SBIR plus commercial avionics company, there is a tremendous growing pain in the management. POC management also needs to be more receptive to hiring from the pool of current employees. They are relying too much on outside talent to fill POC open positions.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The communication and corporation amongst the departments should be improved.

I worked at Physical Optics full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

There was a stock sharing program and decent health care. There were also flexible hours.

    Cons

Safety protocols were routinely and blatantly ignored. Projects were grossly mismanaged. Company is top heavy with way too many people trying to manage while there were very limited personnel in the laboratories.

I worked at Physical Optics full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Ability to direct own research. A lot of expertise across a large number of different disciplines. Support staff are overall good and personable.

    Cons

Upper management is more in the way of business than promoting it. They believe in adversarial relationship with middle management and lower. Little trust in most people except for those that are in a small circle. And those people have proven to not be effective, but trust is still given. Fear of developing real products when opportunity is present, but also misses the target trying to tell the customer what they want when they explicitly give specifications. Have also brought in external reviewers to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of company. When the reports come back and indicate changes that need to occur counter to what upper management believes, mgmt say 'they just don't get it.' Lack of ability to self evaluate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Not sure what to tell them. They have proven they cannot take constructive criticism time and time again. I think the company will continue to limp along until the CEO decides to retire.
