Pros

Nice opportunity if you like to start your career on teaching, small group of students-classes to work with, opportunity for growth since the work place is small

Cons

Very little compensation, students not very motivated/serious to study

Advice to Management

Increase standard of curriculum to make it more challenging to students, pay workers/teachers higher to motivate them

I have been working at Piedmont Virginia Community College part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Part-time and could teach at the high school where I was employed.

    Cons

Demands of the job and the part-time job at PVCC overlapped.

I worked at Piedmont Virginia Community College part-time

    Pros

Taught a laboratory course during my graduate training (actually a bit before 2011, but that wasn't an option when I was filling this out). I enjoyed having the experience of teaching at that level. The fact that the lab prep work is largely done by the staff meant all I had to focus on was the actual teaching and assessment.

    Cons

I didn't think there were many cons. Possibly the fact that the prep work is done by someone else means you have less control, but the trade off is having a lot less prep, so that's worth it to me.

    Advice to Management

None. In one case, I had a student disagree with the style of my exams. I told my boss about it even though I was confident I was doing the right thing. But it was very reassuring that she agreed with my teaching style and said she would support me if problems developed.
