Former Employee - Sales Lead  in  Abilene, TX
Former Employee - Sales Lead in Abilene, TX

I worked at Pier 1 Imports full-time for more than a year

Pros

good company discount the merchandise is pretty and the customers were very friendly and upscale the store always smells nice and plays good music

Cons

unpacking freight . too few hours having to make unreasonable sales/credit card application quotas
at the time i worked there, there was a lot of staff turnover low pay for responsibility

Advice to ManagementAdvice

invest more in your core sales team , reduce the amount of daily paperwork and just create a positive and encouraging environment for the team to suceed in. goals are great but trust and rewards for great employees would create more employee satisfaction.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Employee discount is 25%.
Incentives most months for management team (not for the Store Manager) and sometimes for associates.
    Mostly flexible with any schedule.
    Fun staff and merchandise.
    Easy to catch on.

    Cons

Low pay, even for retail standards. Thinking of a raise? Try 0.15 for a tenured manager.
There are a lot of complaints about the physicality of this job, and although it is true, this is what you signed up to do. Freight and transitions every week or every few months is pretty tough on your body.
Overbearing attitude about pushing the Pier 1 Credit Card to every customer.
Strict fraternization policy amongst a group of 15 people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Expect the same work of all managers -- not just a Sales Leader, who is the work horse of this store. Can you really expect an associate making minimum wage and working only 10 hours a week to be knowledgeable and successful on the floor, or that they will even stay for more than a few months? Pay your staff more and give them ample time on the sales floor each week so that they can actually be a contributing portion of the stores successes.

I have been working at Pier 1 Imports part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Great merchandise! I have great co-workers and like the positive atmosphere.

    Cons

Pay is horrible, and they expect pretty open availability for meetings, floorsets, etc. which is hard for single parents, those with other jobs, and students who have to be bright-eyed after working on setting the floor until 2:00 am. This is a place for a job until you can find a career.
