I worked at Pima Community College part-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

A great place to work at the functional level. I was treated as a professional and given a lot of autonomy by several department chairs. Great support staff and co-workers. As long as the students did not complain I was left alone.

Cons

Typical educational bureaucracy starting at the division dean level. No thought to economy, efficiency, or end result. Focus is on process, procedure and asserting power and dominance in the hierarchy. Ultimately demeaning and dehumanizing. Adjunct is fine, but avoid full time if you can.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a clue -- you are not in academia, you are offering a serivce to customers, just like any other business.

    Pros

Really big company with a lot of temporary positions. If you are looking for good competitive pay for temporary seasonal work, good place.

    Cons

No real room for advancement. Every job is under scrutiny for money reasons. A lot of internal politics and gossip between leadership and departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Really need to look at how employees are managed and have better communication. Confidence needs to be instilled and used to motivate employees.

I have been working at Pima Community College

    Pros

Flexibility to a point. They will try to work with your schedule if you are an Adjunct Faculty. They provide excellent resources for teaching, especially for those who have not taught before.

    Cons

Each campus is different. Be sure to check out the teaching style for your class, department and campus. Also, no office space for adjuncts so we are forced to carry projects, exams, quizzes home.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide a storage area and/or office space for adjunct faculty. Also, more orientation to the technical things would be nice.
