I have been working at Pivotal

Pros

Pivotal products (Cloud Foundry, Spring, Groovy, Grails, RabitMQ) as well as services (Pivotal Labs and technical consulting) are prominent for upcoming future

Cons

Operations (especially in Asia) is a bit poor (the target is just for sales, not for technology)

I have been working at Pivotal full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Resources of a large organization. Strong engineering teams. Several well established products. Sales channels inherited from EMC and VMware. It's early days so there's good potential for growth and career advancement.

    Cons

The company is still largely being formed, common direction is still to be found. The company is large enough to have bureaucracy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communicate the overall vision better. Give people more chances to learn about what other teams are doing and how they work.

I have been working at Pivotal full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Pivotal has a collection of great technologies which have tremendous potential to make it the leader in Cloud, Apps and Data. You'll have lots of smart people to work with. The company has strong cloud engineering, data engineering, field engineering and data science team. Pivotal labs is great. It is hard to find such a great combination of teams within a single company. You get to work on a variety of platforms and tools (CloudFoundry, Greenplum, HAWQ, MADlib, RabbitMQ, Redis, Spring XD, Hadoop, Spark etc.). Open Source is in PIvotal's DNA.
Co-workers are friendly and fun to work with. You get to wear multiple hats and learn all aspects of Pivotal's business. Most importantly you have plenty of opportunity to directly interact with customers.

    Cons

Lack of transparency and prolonged planning cycles unsettled many. Some screw-ups didn't help. Going IPO is not everything if you lose your valuable employees along the way.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue transparency efforts, culture diffusion should continue to be organic, hire aggressively. Different engineering and field teams should find more opportunities to work together. Don't tolerate arrogance from anyone anywhere in the org hierarchy. Address employee churn promptly.
