Pros

Hi energy coming out of certain areas
Never boring due to constant fire drills and changing priorities
Addictive culture for those that are natural workaholics
Lots of very nice, super intelligent people with good intentions (mostly)

Cons

What starts at the top - trickles down. Starting with the Executive Team - there is no genuine consensus or alignment between leadership and their respective areas, which results in such waste of time, money, energy and underutilized resources. The problem seems to be recognized, but no real effort is ever put towards doing anything about it.

Politics and agenda setting are overwhelming, favoritism runs rampant, financial accountability is completely absent and totally unenforced, and there are turf wars going on amongst the senior levels that the folks who actually do the work have to pay the price for. As result - there's morale issues and constant turnover at the true work levels. The culture feels like being back in High School at times, with all of the gossipy back-stabbing and undermining of work that goes on.

Good intentions (which are entirely legit) do not make up for a lack of pure functional expertise. Passion does not excuse a complete void of business intelligence when you're wasting precious budget dollars that were sourced from charitable giving - that could be used to support the services at the health centers.

Advice to Management

Overall to management - Recognize the need to step aside if you don't have the ability to make decisions based on having the right type of management experience.

From the top down - clean house and reset the stage. Cecile is an awesome CEO in the very classic sense. She is focused on being the face of the org from a press standpoint, and is VERY good at it! However she should hire someone to focus on improving the actual business profitability of the organization, knows how to efficiently set priorities and plans, and has a vision for how to bring things into the 21st century.

Cut down on the number of "assistants" being constantly hired, do your own admin work, and instead try hiring SME across vital areas. Empower staff versus always micro-managing the details, who end up being reduced down to order takers.

Do not rank personal ego above the actual dedication to mission on a daily basis. Treat others as you would want to be treated yourselves.

    Pros

PPIL is a state-wide organization and serves many different groups - urban, suburban, and rural patients. It is an important safety-net provider.

    Cons

It doesn't seem to matter whether you are super-competent or completely incompetent - you will be laid off or asked to leave at about the 2 year mark, sometimes earlier. The only people that stay are the VP level people. This means that at the service level there is constant turnover and there are always people in training who don't know the process.

Also the administrative office has an entrenched, isolated, toxic workplace culture.

    Advice to Management

Sometimes line staff have good ideas, and people who go to work in the office building don't understand the stress at Aurora or Near North clinics.
