Doesn't Recommend
Doesn't Recommend

Pros

Convenient location for Pittsburgh residents
The opportunity to work with young people
A steady schedule with days off for most major holidays

Cons

Insufficient pay in comparison to other institutions
Lack of leadership
Lack of quality benefits
Inefficient use of university money and property
Few opportunities for advancement
Heavy use of nepotism
Lack of suitable working conditions
Too much emphasis on profit for a non-profit entity

Advice to Management

Unless the powers that be make some major changes, his school is on a collision course with financial and personnel dishwater. They should take a good long, hard look at their use of resources and how they can better manage them.

    Pros

Can interact with very interesting people from all sorts of unique places.
If you in the correct department, you can learn a lot on the job, get a virtually free and effortless degree(s), and enough resume patting to leave.

    Cons

The only way up is out.
    Facilities are falling apart.
Administration openly spend a lot of money within their departments while other "lesser" departments get nothing.
Only the execs are happy. A lot of miserable underlings.

    Advice to Management

Morale is a problem. Compensation is a problem across the board. It's overall not a fun place to work. There are good people, but we can't hire competent ones with the salary.

  2. Good place to work -- depending on school or department

I have been working at Point Park University

    Pros

I have seen many staff members move to positions in different areas of the university, so the option is there to move around. There are lots of improvements happening on campus right now; the university president is very down to earth and approachable; and I was very satisfied with the benefits and paid time off (the university closes the week between Christmas and New Year's Day, which is great). It's a great location in downtown.

    Cons

There's a lot of red tape and waiting for things to be approved, and a gross lack of response time by some members of the executive team. There are also negative feelings between different schools; some schools or departments feel they don't get equal treatment, yet fail to do anything other than complain, which gets very tiring.

    Advice to Management

Delegate! There are some issues with communication and responding to requests. If you are unable to handle all the requests you get, then hire someone to assist you or delegate some of your tasks. But I've been very happy with many members of management.
