Population Services – “Rhetoric does not always meet Reality”
1 of 1 people found this helpfulPros
Working at PSI, you do feel, at least initially, that you are supporting good work helping people in vulnerable places.
Good Benefits
working with people who are committed to making the world a better place not only by their work at PSI, but by living deliberate lives outside of PSI.
Cons
No significant number of people of color in management.
Often times people who do not really know what you do are put in position to comment about your work.
Because opportunities for upward mobility are so slight; there is a culture of exclusion when it comes to showcasing opportunities for the work you have done. Often times ideas that you have shared with a colleague or manager informally, end up being implemented without any fair or proper recognition or compensation for those ideas, however those same people who took your ideas get promotions and accolades in your stead.
Advice to Senior Management
Don't just innovative and collaborative in rhetoric, strive to do it practice in a wholistic manner. For example as you grow you programmatic depts (contracts, staff, resources, salary, etc) grow you functional and operational depts as well; don't simply tell them that they are dysfunctional and that they need to work smarter. The reality maybe that they are just overworked and feel dejected because they are being treated merely as non-essential and easily replaceable worker-bees and not professionals with real ideas, insititution knowledge and innovative thoughts on how to support PSI's mission and how their work should be accomplished.
