I have been working at Port of Houston Authority

    Pros

Generally employees are hard working and for a relatively small organization it really can accomplish some big things. It is a global leader in the movement of commerce into and out of the US. Truely a global contender. The new CEO has taught senior management to think strategically.

    Cons

Old practices die hard. IT is behind about 10 years but is making rapid improvement under new leadership. HR policies are out dated. Politics plays a big role in decision making. Infrastructure has been ignored for about 20 years in favor of revenue. No investment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give middle managers freedom to manage.

    Current Employee - Electrician
    Current Employee - Electrician

I have been working at Port of Houston Authority

    Pros

Not a traditional electrician job. Kinda like a firehouse, action on demand. OT hrs of 1000-1700 per year easy. Light bulbs, motors, MCC, PLC, AC/DC drives, copper to fibre, interfaces, HMI, etc.
Go as deep as you like. Union = ILA (1% of gross) Annual gross 90 to 140K, mostly up to you.

    Cons

OT hours can stress some relationships. FRC required & supplied. Work at heights with some risky movements under any weather condition. When critical equipment fails you may have to stay with it until the problem is resolved.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wake up. Get up to date on management -to- worker relationships and sound decision making. Be careful who you promote. What you promote as a cooperative person to foreman tends to lack management and craft skills. Which means they never earn respect by those tasked to get things done.
