I have been working at Portland Community College

Pros

management is supportive, great benefits and pay, good place to work if you want to teach or help people, they encourage professional development; strong union- job security (it is almost impossible to get fired if you have been around for a while)

Cons

It is hard to move up within the college if you do not have previous management experience, there are more opportunities for lateral moves; it is so big, sometimes it can get a bit bureaucratic - for example, it takes for ever to hire someone because of the lengthy HR process; because people do not get fired, some "long timers" are not as motivated as new hires are; it may be hard to get in - many staff work as part-time and temporary before getting full -time position

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have more opportunities for staff to move within the college, especially between general fund and grant funded positions

I have been working at Portland Community College

    Pros

    Public service and job security.

    Cons

Politics and "siloing" of resources can be overwhelming. The institution loves to always take "low bid" and usually then finds the product/service does not meet needs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do things right or not at all. Finish what is started before moving on to the next project(s).

I worked at Portland Community College full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The desktop support team at the Campuses really know their environment and all do their best. Within the groups at each campus, they're a pretty cohesive team. The telecom team is nice and definitely knows their stuff. There was a lot of experience (and typical stubbornness) on that team, but still good people. They do the job right.

    Cons

The Network Team constantly had internal (to the team) battles for control of the network. Communication was nonexistent and management was poor, at best. Some projects never get completed without "pulling teeth" because of the senior network engineers dragging their feet.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of hiding from staff problems using mediation and other tactics, actually deal with the source of the problems. Don't let one person ruin it for everyone.
