I worked at Portland State University full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The chemistry department at PSU has a talented and growing group of faculty doing world-class research. The department is well-run and led the university in funding derived from grants written by and awarded to the faculty while I was there. The environment is very cooperative and students have access to a variety of state-of-the-art instrumentation. The research groups are small enough to get to know everyone and doors are nearly always open. I was satisfied with the work-life balance in the lab I worked in. The location is great, downtown and easy to get to, yet close enough to desirable, affordable places to live.

    Cons

Funding was limited at times due to government cutbacks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the hard work and progressive approach to university and department-level administration.

I have been working at Portland State University part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Very flexible about scheduling. Supportive about success as a student. Tries to taylor tasks to interests and professional development. Very nice to have work and school in one place.

    Cons

Jobs can get tedious. Outdated systems and bureaucratic management create a significant portion of the problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to budget a little more on reasonable systems so IT doesn't have to make older systems try to work for current demands.
