I have been working at Pratt & Whitney as an intern (less than an year)

Pros

- Interesting work.
- Skills learned in engineering school are applied.
- Coworkers are articulate, patient, helpful, and generally interesting to talk to.
- Pay is one of the better of the internships my friends got.

Cons

- It's part of a corporation, which means that it will always have to deal with formal processes. Deal with them and life goes on.
- A lot of past information is not well organized, and some of it is nearly impossible to find. Things can generally be found by talking to the appropriate people, though.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work.

Great place for stable career, but limited growth opportunities

I have been working at Pratt & Whitney full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Generally very well-rounded company
    - Absolutely great work environment, culture, and people to work with
    - Great work-life balance
    - "Pay for performance" system is "fair"...until you realize that it means limited raises
    - Benefits of a big company with well established processes
    - Safe place to work - good EH&S and ergonomics programs
    - For the most part, good communications and visibility into management activity
    - Employee Scholar Program for free degrees! While it's been made less generous, it's still a good program.

    Cons

    - Inconsistent management practices with respect to promotions
    - Compensation sub par...self reported as 25th percentile of industry
    - Limited opportunities to move up - top heavy organization
    - Need 8 years continuous service to get 3rd week of vacation - ridiculous
    - Some people will tell you promotion practices are also gender-biased towards females. I was doubtful at first, but later having experienced something along these lines (I'm male), I am in no position to dispute this claim.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be consistent in promotion practices. Pay your people better, for god's sake. The model of hiring people who absolutely must be in the aerospace business and will sacrifice pay to be in the industry will not work as you ramp up and try to hire more younger folks. Competitive salary is important, and if you can't pay competitively, be prepare for high employee turnover. I, for one, am prepared to leave after only 4 years with the company.
