I have been working at Premera Blue Cross

    Pros

    Good health benefits
    Pension plan
Bonuses are large for Senior staff
    People are low-key and nice
Location outside of Seattle is convenient to those who live North of the city

    Cons

very conservative style of management, approach to technology and innovation.
too many levels of managment. CIO-Exec VP-Sr.VP-VP-Sr mgr-mgr- and like 10 different levels of developer levels.
    token 2-3% raises per year

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Flatten out the org structure and cut out the fat. With increased competition, the organization must run leaner. Having so many levels of mgt is also discouraging to those with the ambition to climb the ladder, seeing that the ladder has so many rungs and obstacles.

Get rid of the pension plan to encourage a higher turnover rate to "refresh" the talent pool. many people are just hanging on to their jobs because of the pension plan. Innovative ideas and thinking cannot be fostered in this environment
