Was well-trained for temp work. Nice people. Lots of parking. Good bus access.

Cons

Not properly prepared by temp agency about actual job. During peak work time, a bit chaotic.

I have been working at Premera Blue Cross full-time

    Pros

Beautiful campus - landscaping always looks nice. Just added more parking, too (free)
    BBQ's in the summertime
PTO policy - good incentive to not get sick! 22 days for the first 15 years, plus 8 company holidays
Easy commute for those who live on the north end
Pension plan in place, and is funded every year
Good bonus and benefits plan (employee only doesn't pay any health plan premium)
Company has stayed out of the negative press, a real plus given the healthcare industry today
    It's not Regence/Cambia!
Focus on process improvement and doing the right thing - hasn't made the same blunders that Regence has
Good local company to have on your resume
Has won some new big name clients recently from national companies: Starbucks, Alaska Airlines
Big name customers: Microsoft, Weyerhauser, etc.
People want health insurance - company is largely recession proof...nice place to be 2008-2011

    Cons

Some managers are great, others are horrible. Hope you get a great one!
The "LEAN" philosophy is good overall, but in some departments, it translates into understaffing
Not sure if the CEO still exists - it's been months since I've seen him...and I work on the same floor!
It's in the healthcare industry - will this company still be around in 2 years? Anyone's guess...
Management by textbook/article - managers take classes, read books, then assume they know it all

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Understand that "LEAN" works both ways - if you want "excellence", then be prepared to staff accordingly where needed.

Infuriatingly slow to respond, but amazingly stable company

I have been working at Premera Blue Cross

    Pros

Stability is definitely a plus -- this company isn't going anywhere. Filled with really smart people. Trying, sometimes successfully, to change its ability to act like a nimble company. Attractive campus.

    Cons

Ultra conservative. Often unable to free itself to think outside the box. Calls itself transparent but doesn't share information with the rand and file. Departments are tragically siloed. Initiatives start, stall, restart, drop under the radar and disappear with alarming frequency.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out of building 3. Walk around. Mingle with the rank and file. Celebrate what's good about the company -- loudly. Share strategy. Recognize your workforce is your biggest asset and thank them for how they contribute.
