Premera Blue Cross Marketing in Mountlake Terrace, WA:   (Past Employee - 2007)

Pros

If you can get a job in this economy at Premera, probably a good reason to work there. Otherwise, I can't think of any other reason you would want to work there.

Cons

Very crowded office facilities and parking (even in a suburban community). Senior management is very disconnected from the real workers. Senior management chooses financial motives over all else including customers, health plan member welfare, and especially employees. Stingy stingy stingy raises and very rarely provides bonuses (none for hourly). Their "holiday" gifts are insulting...I wish they would just use the money for charity. Not a marketing or customer driven culture. If you can sell health insurance, they'll love you...everyone else, take a back seat.

Advice to Senior Management

Put the customer and member first...no more pretending to do it.

Ha, ha, I have to agree about the baaaaaaaaaad Christmas "gifts." One year, it was a coffee coaster. Another year it was popcorn bowl. You have a good idea: Give the money to charitable organizations instead.

KING-5 and Seattle Times gives Premera good customer and employee reviews. But I don't think these organizations delve into the company. They are mere polls. And who knows who is really doing the voting.

Management prides itself in being on the cutting-edge of management style. The latest one jumps on the "LEAN" initiative. It doesn't take a Harvard graduate to know that to have happy employees, you just need to be fair, open-minded, and accommodating. Instead, management breeds a culture of fear and finger-pointing. As far as cutting costs, why not start at cutting the president's leased BMW 750i allowance??????

The HR department is a laugh. They can't retain their HR staff past 2 years. And if you're an employee with a complaint about your boss or work situation, you don't dare go to HR. You won't be heard. HR is working to protect the company, not you.

The IT division is full of prima-donnas who put each other down so they would look good. When a server experiences slowness or bogs down, everyone runs around like chickens with their heads cut off. Pity the fool who has to answer to a roomful of IT "experts" to explain why the system froze. Lots of finger-pointing and blaming.

So, my advice is: Go work someplace else. You will be miles ahead if you do. And if you're currently working at Premera, just bide your time until you find a better job at a better company. Just watch your back. Because inevitably you will be canned.
