Current Employee - Sit In A Cube in Mountlake Terrace, WA

I have been working at Premera Blue Cross

Pros

Nice people on the whole
Health care benefits are decent
Relaxed work pace (sometimes too much so)
Very few people work crazy hours
Decent balance of work and personal life but many IT salaried staff expected to support apps 24/7
Job security compared to many other places
Good geographical location if you don't want to be in the City (reverse commute)

Cons

Very little upward movement of talent so if you want to move up you may be forced to move on
People stay too long making it hard for new ideas to penetrate the old guard
IT is a troubled group, a number very questionable things going on there
Limited investment in training, partly due to being over staffed (too many people doing too little)
The "who you know network" is alive and well here
The ratio of "doers" to "watchers" is all wrong
Way too many meetings, party because there are too many "watchers" and they can't function without them
Limited parking
Anti-telecommuting policy in many departments despite lack of parking
In general the feeling of this place reflects the fact that too many of the managers have been here since they started their careers and have never made any effort to stay current with is happening in the world outside of Premera

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Flush some people out and let some new ideas in
Someone needs to take a hard look at IT - how can so many people get so little done
PTO policy is weak, combining it with sick time brings too many sick people into the office
Ask yourselves hard, honest questions every time you loose good employees

I have been working at Premera Blue Cross

    Pros

    Leaves time for family life
Wages plus bonus make it hard to leave.
It's located north of Seattle. Reasonably easy to escape the concrete Jungle

    Cons

Leadership isn't looking for employee contribution. Managers have their pets who have been there a long time and been following bad practice since they started. Thus, the rest of the employees are beaten down left to push the button. Many of the employees that have been doing the job are even hired internal are not qualified to do what they do. Their idea is as long as everyone is following the process then everything is happy, happy. They scoff at industry practice.
Push the button with a smile.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most of the incompetence starts at the time. If you want to change something you have to be willing to implement the change yourself.

I have been working at Premera Blue Cross

    Pros

    Very easy commute
Little to no micro managing (in my area at least)
    Decent people
    Nice campus
    Very competent boss

    Cons

    Turnover, especially with management
    Anything related to IT
Although the lack of micromanaging is very nice it can also be a setback. Often do not have any guidelines and tend to wonder if what I am working on is the right direction.
Non existent communication in terms of new processes. Exceptionally bad with the internal web and outside software systems
    Lower pay by comparison
Not much interest in promoting or training staff

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Allow managers more time with their direct reports. Consistently.
Overhaul IT and get online apps efficient
Stop with the massive number of little projects
