I have been working at Progress Software full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

After a few years of changing strategies, Progress has returned to its roots as an innovative application development software company. Recent changes to the senior management team have added a burst of energy and resulted in a solid plan for growth. The company has breathed new life into some legacy products, developed or acquired others, and generated real enthusiasm, both internally and externally. It's an exciting time to be at Progress.

Cons

A few isolated instances of managers who can't agree on strategy or hire the right people -- but such executives are fewer and farther between than in the recent past.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Just because a strategy worked at another company doesn't automatically mean it will work here. Every company is different. Listen and ask questions.

    I worked at Progress Software full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    - nice benefits
    - 9-5 job if that is your kind of thing (it isn't mine)
    - lots of really nice people worked there

    Cons

    - management team seemed elitist
    - HR did not investigate poor management/organizational issues effectively
    - people that sucked up to management got promoted, talent often under appreciated
    - environment felt pretty insulated from the rest of the world

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - 360 reviews that are taken seriously
    - get out more often and talk to your employees and people outside Progress
    - bring in new people on the executive team and middle management
    - make sure each individual has clear objectives that are measured properly

    Pros

    Developing pretty cool technology that MAY be able to beat the big guys in the cloud computing space.

    Cons

    Not sure about future direction. The company has been shrinking (lots of layoffs). Progress may be sold once new products get tration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    You need to give employees a reason to care about the success of the company - especially as we go through these tough financial times
