I have been working at Protective Life

Pros

For the most part flexible and willing to work with you when you need time off. Fair benefits package as far as insurance and such go.

Cons

If you are looking for a place where knowing the right people and kissing ass gets you far, Protective may be for you. Hard work and being a good employee get you no where. Protective is all about who you know and not what you know. From the very top down management is only concerned with furthering their own careers and the bottom line. They hype it up on their web site and through recruiters as a great place to work where everyone knows everyone's name, but it is not true at all. Most people walk around there looking down to the floor and most people are just rude. Senior management are total corporate elitists who don't even say thank you when you hold the door for them and are totally unapproachable. Mid level managers are only concerned with their own personal corporate career ladders and there is very little employee recognition. They claim to be all about professional development for their employees, but that is only if you are golfing buddies or use to work with someone in upper management. Salary increases dont filter down to most employees and are consumed by mid managers and department leads before the get to the people actually doing the work. There are serious nepotism problems company wide at protective, so if you don't know someone in management you will never get ahead. There are MAJOR problems in HR as well, so employees have no voices at all.
Protective is great place to let your career die. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of being so focused on the bottom line and having nothing but accountants running the company, you should take a good look at why so many people have negative things to say on their employee feedback surveys and why there is so much turn over. Dear Mr. Johns if you really want to sell the company so bad so that you can make a profit and screw over everyone else, just do it already.

    I worked at Protective Life

    Pros

Very old-school environment. There were lots of opportunities for advancement, but they were not doing a lot of hiring. Great company to work for.

    Cons

They had strict budgets that would not permit a lot of hiring, but it is understandable with the current economy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the good work! My manager always listeneed to my ideas, and made me feel very important. It was great.

I have been working at Protective Life

    Pros

Great people, feels like a big family. The benefits are excellent.

    Cons

Company is growing too fast and they are experiencing major growing pains. If you like to roll your sleeves up, get in there, and figure stuff out, then this place is for you. If you're looking for structure, steer clear. They do a lot of stuff "the short way" and deadlines set are too aggressive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better reward your talented employees and focus on retaining talent. Make better long term decisions, not just "quick fixes." Put the right people in the right positions, and invest dollars in expanding/building certain departments to better support the growing business.
