I worked at Protiviti

Pros

Good core business in audit and IT audit. You could do very well and be successful if your specialties are aligned with Protiviti's core business. It can be tough if you have a specialty outside the firm's core business. People who stick it out and suffer through the lower ranks will eventually get promoted (sometimes rather quickly) and will get paid very well.... but you do need to suffer quite a few years first. If you stick it out, long term it's a great place to be.

Cons

Hours can be extremely long (nights, weekends, travel) and compensation doesn't necessarily match the commitment. People (in same peer group) are paid more or less the same (+/- 5K) regardless of whether you are top performer or bottom performer. Very little incentive to go above and beyond. You are incentivized to be mediocre and as a result there are very many mediocrities at the company. The bottom people often get laid off (up or out) and the top people sadly leave for better opportunities.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay scale is disproportionate. The top management is very well paid ($$$ millions) and bottom staffers are barely paying their rent. Pay seems to be more based on seniority vs one's ability / performance. Other consulting firms of roughly equivalent size are not as disproportionate in pay. Joe Tarantino (CEO) is a real good guy though. He does care about his people. Many folks in senior management also genuinely care.

I have been working at Protiviti

    Pros

    Plenty of time off
Hours are not as bad as with public accounting
Lots of variety of clients (size and industry)
    Fun office environment
    Opportunities to travel

    Cons

401k benefits are minimal but competitive
Consulting in general is not for everyone. I think the travel can wear people down and makes it difficult for people to stay here long enough to make it to a management posistion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Protiviti should continue to streamline operations, identify specific markets to make investments in, invest in fewer solutions, and provide resources to areas with the biggest potential to grow following the recent "recession".

I have been working at Protiviti

    Pros

good feedback and project review system, generally pleasant working environment, reasonable work/life balance, engaged management, team environment, will reimbuse for college courses and 1 cert per year

    Cons

Low pay is primary. Executive management at our location appear to be aware of this issue but seem to have their hands tied due to inappropriate allocations for pay raises. Significant layoffs of lower performers, high turnover of top performers due to low compensation, and overall disatisfaction with executive level excuses for high chargability/sales expectations and low compensation

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Determine a way to provide fair salaries, or if necessary, compensate with extra vacation time, etc.
