I have been working at Providence Health & Services

Pros

room for growth, a large company so many opportunities, the people really care about eachother, the quality of work is important to leadership, no layoffs have been done during the tough economy.

Cons

leadership has staff working on too many large initiatives at once with no clear direction. It can be difficult to move up the ladder but not impossible.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have one clearly focused large initiative going at a time. There are so many going on right now it feels like the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing. Implement salary overviews to ensure people that've been with the company for a long time are being fairly compensated. It's frustrating to get an annual increase that barely matches the rate of inflation.

    Pros

Dedicated to patient care & community support; opportunities to give feedback; learning opportunities; good benefits; good pay; lots of fringe benefits like free gym and discounts at local & national merchants.

    Cons

Layers and layers of red tape; hiring process is almost impossible to navigate; everything takes way too long; some of the support services departments don't have the same work ethic and dedication to quality that you see in the medical and customer service staff.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please stop trying to centralize and standardize everything. Your HR and Purchasing systems try to be all things to all people, and in consequence they end up serving no one well.

Leaders not competent at some levels

    Pros

Flexible work schedule. Sense of working for something greater due to its mission.

    Cons

If you are ok with a "Lifestyle" job and you are OK with just being able to perform "ok" work then this may be the place fore you. But, do not expect understanding for "excellence" which is supposed to be a core value of this organization. They allow poor performers to stay in the organization and suck it dry of productivity. The people who do perform well, get assigned more and more work, with little "sincere" recognition.

The Leaders are not competent at some levels and nothing is done about it. So the employees suffer though the lack of clear direction and ability to command respect.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get competent. Grow leadership and planning skills. Listen to key staff.
