Former Employee - Property Manager in Las Vegas, NV
Former Employee - Property Manager in Las Vegas, NV

I worked at Public Storage full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Public Storage is a good place to learn the business of storage. No late hours. Mid morning start time is great. Get to work one on one with the public.

Cons

Workers are not promoted beyond property manager. Upper management are hired outside the company and most have never worked in the storage business, yet think they know what works best over the people who actually work it.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let people be themselves instead of robots with scripts. What looks good on paper is not always the best option.

    Pros

decent salary, bonus can be good if you hit the right numbers

    Cons

You are expected to be on-call 24/7 and break-ins and emergencies can happen 24/7. Even when officially on vacation, you better be on top of an emergency before your boss hears about it. A day off is not a day off because properties WILL call you, and you better answer. Property Managers are not empowered to make any decisions, so they will call you multiple times per day. The scripts change every month and you must memorize them word-for-word, then waste time making sure your entire district knows these scripts by heart. PS focuses on idiotic things like calling customers 7-10 times a month for rent payment, even if a 3 year history clearly shows this customer pays on the last day of the month, every month. You still better have 7-10 document phone calls to harass this customer. PS wastes so much energy on petty things that in no way improve the business and then the things that need attention don't get done. Also, you NEVER have an adequate budget for the maintenance required. So many emergencies happen and you HAVE to get that stuff fixed, so you can never keep up on maintaining properties. Every DM I ever knew had thousands and thousands of unpaid bills each month due to this problem. MANY companies make PS pay cash only due to a history of not paying their bills on time. The whole management chain is messed up and it's a never ending cycle. Your best bet is ANY other storage company-- the turn-over here in incredible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Run a property or district yourself, then you can make EDUCATED decisions on how to run this business. Changing the stupid scripts every single month does nothing for operations or customer service. Run a property for 6 weeks and I guarantee your entire perception about this business changes. Let a DM have 2 days off per week without being on call, let a vacation mean no cell phone or laptop. All the district's clean up properties and put their best employees where a regional or higher visits, so senior mgmt NEVER truly sees what it's like to run a property. And pay DM's a freakin' car allowance. You make more money than any storage company and you're as cheap as possible when reimbursing the people working 80 hour weeks and driving their cars into the ground. Pay the people who make this company its money.

I have been working at Public Storage full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Working alone and having office/steady hours are about it.

    Cons

Scripts....... I'm not a robot and I know how to deal with the public. They expect you to sell 8.5 locks per every 10 rentals or the regional/DM manager will come to your property and hassle you. They expect a %20 increase across the board every year which is ridiculous in this economy. They make us tell the customer that some sort of insurance is required to rent a unit when they don't have to have insurance at all (were lying to the public to make more money). Bonus's are disappearing every year and this year my PTO was cut in half... If your on unemployment, do yourself a favor, and stay on it. I would NOT recommend renting a unit there either because of lack of security, Thefts, and they will sell your stuff if you don't pay. Corporate Greed is a BIG PROBLEM with this company. Employees are struggling to survive and PS corporate is spending extra money on building a useless float for the new years day parade... Their ethics are really screwed up bad here.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Forget the scripts and treat your employees better (were not used car sells men). Your going to have employees straight out of Mcdonald's because of your pay scale (so don't expect much work getting done). Start your PM's around $18/hr and RF's around $14/hr and you'll get quality work. I could give them all the advice in the world but their not going to use it anyway!!!
