Former Employee - Part Time Cashier
Former Employee - Part Time Cashier

I worked at Publix part-time (less than an year)

Pros

- Flexible hours if you are a student
- Reasonable enough pay, not the best if you are depending solely on it
- Some people are nice to talk to
- Cashier/bagger work is relatively simple, not too complicated if you are at the lower levels of experience
- Raises are available
- Requested time-off is often granted if you have a good reason

Cons

- Manager was rude and unprofessional, as well as other staff
- Have to stand the whole time with only a thirty minute break in the middle of your shift
- You are constantly being monitored and micromanaged
- Customers feel entitled without cause and are extremely rude

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have respect for your employees. If you honestly don't know what that entails, please look it up. Treat them like people and don't let customers run all over them or you could be losing a great employee.

Great place to work, if you are not a cashier

Current Employee - Cashier in Miami, FL

I have been working at Publix part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Customer comes first, clean stores, beautiful produce and meat department, coworkers amazing.

    Cons

They make the cashiers and front service clerks(baggers) do custodian duties. Those duties include cleaning bathrooms, emptying trash in the entire store, sweeping and mopping the entire store, vacuuming and window cleaning, cleaning the break room, cleaning the refrigerator, cleaning the mop room. This is all addition to cleaning the register area, which is the only place they should be cleaning, anyway. They also make the cashiers and front service clerks run the auto-scrub floor machines until 11pm at night.

It is hot in Florida, and the front service clerks (baggers) get to wear shorts and Publix polo shirts. However, the cashiers, who can spend at least half, it not their whole shift bagging, also have to bag and take people out to their cars, but they won't allow them to wear shorts. Instead cashiers have to wear the cashier uniform of long black pants, black shoes, a button up shirt on the men and a button up shirt with a vest for the women. It's dangerously hot, to the point I've seen coworkers at the point of collapse. The company will also not provide or allow baggers to wear any type of reflective gear, and being in the parking lot is dangerous, and it's just a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop making cashiers and baggers clean your store, provide reflective safety equipment for when they have to be in the parking lot. And let cashiers dress more appropriately for Florida summers.

I worked at Publix full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Publix stock, so many places to grow/transfer to, most people are great, pay is ok,

    Cons

Small misunderstandings should be coached and used as a learning tool, not an opportunity to fire a 5+ year associate with consistently exceeds marks on reviews. Beware, you are not as safe in your position as you may think, I don't care how great of an associate you are.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get to know your associates in the IT area on a more personal level. We are people, with families and needs, not just someone you can dump out on the streets.
