Current Employee - Administrative Assistant in New York, NY
Current Employee - Administrative Assistant in New York, NY

I have been working at PwC full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

For current employees, excellent benefits include vacation, competitive salary, 401Ks, and flexibile work arrangements.

Cons

Administrative Assistants are not treated as part of the company, and are in a separate group. In any case, the company is no longer hiring new permanent employees and will only use temps or one-year contractors instead. Other support roles have already been outsourced. The requirements for newly outsourced admin jobs is steep in terms of skills, but the jobs mostly entail using PwC-specific databases, which take 6 months or a year to learn. By that time, the new person will be out the door, and may not have had much opportunity to use the great (and transferrable) skills they needed to get hired. It's only worth it for people who want a temp job, possibly while looking for a permanent job somewhere else.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

As a permanent admin employee now trying to get things done with staff in outsourced areas, the job is more difficult. Things that used to take one request and would be accompished within a week now take multiple requests and may take months to accomplish, if ever. It will get worse as the admin jobs themselves are outsourced. Outsourcing is not attuned to the long-term strength or even continuance of the Firm. As the loyalty of the Firm to its people erodes, the loyalty of people to the Firm has correspondingly eroded. The Firm is not too big to fail, but ultimately it can't succeed without committed people.

    Pros

Great opportunity to build a professional network. Good opportunities for different kinds of work and being exposed to different industries. Flexibility with family life.

    Cons

Level of compensation is lower than expected. Work/life balance is talked about, but promotions are heavily weighted towards billed hours and number of hours of overtime. How much and the type of work you do is very dependent upon the work your directors bring in - if they don't bring in work, you won't get the billable hours and your performance review will suffer.
