I have been working at QVC

Pros

Work/life balance cannot be beat - - Senior management demonstrates a rabid support for work from home and flexible schedule programs. Benefits are top notch and have been sustained with little additional cost passed on to employees. Salaries are very competitive in areas that the company values.

Cons

There is a high volume of middle management that has no decision-making authority and no connection to the actual work that is being done. This has the result of producing process bureaucracy. Company is also impacted significantly by the economic downturn, so a depressed economy results in a higher likelihood of staff reduction and salary freezes...But the company has been diligent in protecting benefits, so there has been a great response to balance increasing costs to the company against increases which are borne by the employees.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to expand the demographic that we are reaching - Continue to explore new platforms and to be groundbreaking in technology - - But, keep the focus on the TV broadcast, which is the bread and butter of the company. Keep finding great new vendor partnerships and rolling out new brands that will grow the business...
Find a way to streamline the org chart to eliminate some of the non-value adding middle management.

    I worked at QVC

    Pros

Nice facility and pleasant work environment, good benefits including tuition reimbursement, opportunity to move around within the company and get diverse experience. Generally supportive mid-level management and clear objectives / measurements of success. Well-respected within the retail community and loved by loyal customers. Some attempts at "greening" the organization, as well as starting some flex time and working from home.

    Cons

All new executive-level managment from the big, bad retail world has sucked the genuine energy and trust out of the company top to bottom. They are poor communicators and even worse visionaries. There is no strong long-term strategy for the company. Product quality has suffered big time, as evidenced by the much better brands on HSN recently. Everyone (particularly long-time employees) feels like they have a target on their back, even though the company is still very profitable. No raises or bonuses for the past 2 years, despite that profitability. Nothing gets done quickly, even though we like to say we are "nimble". Expectations are extremely high with respect to level of commitment - it is a 24/7 company in all aspects. It's all about face time and time spent at your desk or in endless meetings. Sadly, best efforts and good business results are never enough - they always want more.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trying to reinvent the brand - go back to what made it successful in the first place, leverage that, and bring it into the present. Trust middle management and get the senior management to stop kissing up to each other and make something happen.

    I worked at QVC

    Pros

    Fun, fast-paced culture
    Always a lot going on
Freedom to make valuable changes to processes within buying office
Cool to learn about production; opportunities to sit with line producer
Learn how the buying process works; sit in on vendor meetings
Learn how item selection process works; sit in on promotional item meetings with senior management

    Cons

    Rather low pay
As an MBA, hard to justfiy going back--difficult to know what options might be available for me there since a lot of their hires are straight out of college
Unclear career path outside of buying and planning

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The leadership at QVC is great; Mike George (CEO) has helped me out on several projects for business school and is overall very open to collaboration and moving in new directions
    Tough environment right now...
