Pros

The compensation and benefits are very competitive. The overall atmosphere is professional.

Cons

Advancement within the company is limited. Many of the senior positions are held by ex military officers and when those positions open up, they are almost always filled by other retiring military.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to remember to take care of the work force and they will take care of you.

Big, new conglomerate finding its feet

    Pros

If you're dedicated and hardheaded enough, you can make a real difference in projects that are important for national security. The pay and benefits are good, and I have never had trouble getting time off.

    Cons

The lower management structure is very flat and there is little opportunity for career or professional growth. For a company so focused on technical work, one would expect managers to have more respect for their scientific and engineering employees. There is no career track for technical professionals. To advance, one must go into management.

QNA is a large, new conglomerate composed of many legacy companies that have little in common besides doing technical contracting for the government, so conditions probably vary greatly from one division to another.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ask your working-level engineers how they think their divisions are being run. Don't put too much trust in what your managers and VPs are telling you about morale. Get your engineers talking to each other across divisional lines - there is a tremendous amount of talent that is being wasted due to lack of local opportunities.

    Good Opportunities, but incompetent management.

    Pros

Good customers and interesting opportunities. They have many interesting contracts that hopefully they will be able to retain, but I am not confident they will.

    Cons

Incompetent management. Inability to hire competent engineers. They have spots that they have been unable to fill and they don't get good people in when they do hire them. This is a difficult industry to recruit for and they are not very good at filling the needs. I wouldn't recommend anyone work for QNA without determining when the next contract will be recompeted. They do not seem to know how to take care of their employees or their customers and they are in a competitive environment. Some positions are used to subsidize other postions based on the ability of the employee to negotiate so find out what your billed rate is and make sure you are getting a good percentage of this. Don't believe anything you hear until you see it in writing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please try harder to keep the good contracts and keep your people in different departments working together instead of against each other. Don't promise employees that which you cannot deliver.
