I worked at QinetiQ as an intern

Pros

The work at QinetiQ is some of the most interesting anywhere. With a great range of possibilities, business has now been streamlined. The company has a great work life balance.

Cons

The company was going through a period of major change at the time of working, with many fearing for jobs. But the company previously had issues harnessing the capabilities of the employees to create products.

Positive Outlook
Approves of CEO

I worked at QinetiQ full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Access to a wide range of defence research and to learn how to do research in an industrial and political setting. Good professional environment with a lot of insight and high standards of intellectual reasoning.

    Cons

The management at best, neglectful towards their staff. The company is hampered by a civil service mentality. Because the company is ex-civil service, the salaries are nothing less than rubbish. And worse, the terms and conditions are continuously being eroded. You are expected to work more hours, the final salary pension has gone, you have to work a set number of hours before you can claim overtime, the company is riddled with "glass ceilings" and generalists are heavily favoured against specialist, which used to be what the organisation was about. The runes are, this company is winding down. They have tried to be civil commercial and U turned to be defence. Now defence funding is in decline and there is reduced demand for defence reports, they are trying to be civil commercial again. They have had 14 years to achieve this as part of the core values of the initial privatisation. That was how they were going to be successful and they drummed it into their staff, all those years ago. They should have cracked it by now and they clearly haven't. In short, they treated their staff so badly, a blog came out of this. Starting with qinetiqette, which got closed. Then qinetiqettex, no longer maintained. Lastly, qqmismanagement, which mysteriously disappeared. Regardless of the detail of how these blogs were silenced, the fact that they happened in the first place speaks volumes. They may very likely come back as QinetiQ and Leo Quinn does not seem to have learned, and seems to think that power is all, and all can be silenced. Whatever your position in all of this, it has been, and may continue to be, an interesting experience. Though to many, who have families to feed and support, not a good one.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Turn away from blind cuts and do your job to deliver a realistic vision for the company and its growth, building on what it is and what it can do. Sadly, this may have been, don't privatise a civil service department in the first place. It doesn't work and it is nothing less than outrageously cruel.
