Current Employee - Principal Engineer in Santa Clara, CA

I have been working at Qualcomm full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

We have a high energy, results oriented engineering staff.
The projects have been interesting, challenging, and ground breaking.
The culture is caring and optimistic. We support each other and everyone is trying to make our products the best they can be.

Cons

No truly successful product as of now. We had a successful product but management killed it because it wasn't successful enough. The result was a massive and painful RIF.
Sales regularly promises the moon with no idea how it will get delivered. Sales is regularly rewarded for this behavior.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Become more "engineer-driven" like the rest of Qualcomm.

I have been working at Qualcomm full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Employees work on a wide range of cutting-edge technologies and are able to learn many exciting skills if they want to learn. Due to explosion of mobile industry, there are many opportunities in the company and it has grow more than 50% over past few years

    Cons

Long hours and lack of work-life balance. The industry is super competitive and company/departments need to work very hard to develop new technologies and maintain existing ones. Late night and weekend work is quite common in most departments. Salary is not competitive compare to other large companies in the industry, so many good people left to join companies like Apple, Amazon, etc. There are still many dead woods in the firm and don't seem to contribute much to company's bottom line, except creating more meetings for people around them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut off more dead woods and provide better compensation to keep people motivated and recruit/retain good people.
