A place to work that's good for your resume. A good place for your career if you are old, white and male.

Pros

Globally recognizable brand name of "Caterpillar" looks good on your resume. This is the only reason to work for this company.

Cons

Competitive salary to them means that their maximum pay for a job position is equal to the average salary range for industry. If you work hard for years, the best that you'll do is make average salary compared to others doing the same thing for other companies. This also means that if you are getting anything less than the maximum, you are getting paid less than most people doing the same thing you are, elsewhere.

Management is promoted from within, but lacking any training, so management doesn't know what they are doing and are often times unprofessional in a bad way. Promotions are usually for old white men so if you are not old, white or male, you're out of luck. Management is virtually all old white men. Their management methods were already obsolete decades ago.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

This place is an insult to equal opportunity employers, with their claim to be such.

I have been working at Quinn Group full-time for more than a year

    Pros

This is a great company to start a career for a heavy equipment technician. They offer the best training in the industry, both online and in company paid classes. All of the shops in LA, Orange, and Ventura Counties are practically brand new, modern facilities. The company is full of old time master technicians with 20 plus years of experience for a new guy to learn from. They promote from within. They are one of the last blue collar companies that will still hire white people. There is a pretty decent benifits package with company 401k match and profit sharing (after 2 years employment).

    Cons

Your pay will be at least 5 to 15 dollars an hour below what others in the industry make. An entry level mechanic makes between $18 and $21 an hour depending on location. A solid experienced mechanic makes in the low $20s, while the top 10% make around $30. They know that the prestige of working for "CAT" means people will accept lower pay than most other companies in the industry. The shops outside of the LA metro area are very old and run down, even though they are responsible for the majority of the revenue. They have quite possibly the most mismanaged and incompetant HR and IT departments of any company ever. Need to download a simple 20 mb service manual? Better have some coffee, it will take about 20 minutes. When you are offered a job, HR will take a good month to two months to get off their butts and actually get you working. The 401k matching and profit share don't start untill after two years of employment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix the HR and IT departments. Also fix accounts payable, it is embarressing for your field techs to be told that their companies account has been closed because they take forever to pay their bills. When your best stores are in the Central Valley, maybe they should be the first ones remodeled instead of the ones closest to where the CEO lives. Outsource your entire IT department and upgrade your unreliable parts and sales tools. Quit scratching your heads wondering why your customers keep stealing your technicians. Any idiot can get on the computer and realize he makes in the bottom 10% of the wage scale for his position. 401k matching and profit share should start after 90 days, not 2 years.
