Pros

Relaxed Environment, Good Benefits, By the beach.

Cons

People come here and get stuck, people rarely speak to each other, there is no upward mobility, bad communication, the rest of the company is at the helm of the researchers.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward hard working employees, don't ignore them.

I have been working at RAND full-time

    Pros

Smart people, interesting work, nice offices, strong reputation, culture of excellence.

    Cons

Virtually no career path in most roles. People are actually discouraged from trying to move up. You may need to leave in order to grow professionally.
Lots of internal competition among colleagues and peers.
Minimal access to professional development training.
Financial stress on many projects, leading people to sometimes work long hours without corresponding pay.
    Little racial and ethnic diversity.
The recent reorganization was poorly executed, and some of the leadership is not competent to handle their new responsibilities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be willing to look at the ways in which the reorganization isn't working and don't wait five or ten years to fix it.

Allow people to grow professionally within the company so you can avoid some of the stagnation that has been going on for some time.

Provide more support for developing new work.

Flexible work place, variety of work, but commitment to quality is uneven and stress is high

    Pros

Researchers can choose their own schedule and work from home when appropriate. Feel like you can make a difference in government policy. Interesting challenges and the opportunity to work with people with a wide range of skills.

    Cons

Easy to be overworked. High overhead results in projects that are underfunded for what they do. Many principal investigators are poor managers and that makes it hard to provide concise timely work. Reviews process does not allow for project members to give feedback on project leaders. Who to talk to about problems is not very clear. Can feel like you are punished for speaking out about quality concerns.
