Pros

Every employee is given a free BlackBerry.

The workplace is fairly easygoing if you work in a professional field. Benefits packages is up to par with most good companies to work for.

Cons

RIM is very good at promoting a very false representation of itself to the media and public eye. RIM is NOT what they say they are.

I worked for 5 years at this company ... I can tell you the truth.

Here are some examples of what the public doesn't know

RIM's Manufacturing facility could not get anyone from KW to come work through a local temp agency.. due to LOW PAY and very difficult work hours... so they have now began shipping in employees of the streets of Toronto, London, etc.. having them work a 12 hr shift + 2 hours of travel time .. for $9 /hr.

The manufacturing workers are given a BlackBerry however the employees that work in all areas outside of the manufacturing facility are given "better", "newer" models than the hard working people in the manufacturing facility. The manufacturing facility is given devices that aren't even sold anymore. Up until a year ago .. they were given the 1st BlackBerry that was ever made ( with the monochrome screen ).

Can you believe that this BILLION dollar company ... is underpaying the people that work with their bare hands to pump these devices out so poorly. These devices are not made by machines.. they are all put together by hand.

The schedule they have these poor people working on is very difficult... people are collapsing all the time.. ambulances are there frequently. .. but nothing is ever done about it.

RIM also suffers a huge loss from all the devices that are stolen from the manufacturing facility. They have had to implement security measures much like an airport. You have to remove your shoes, go through metal detectors, etc. Maybe employees wouldnt be stealing from them if they treated their employees with respect ? RIM's employees simply don't respect them.

I worked in the manufacturing facility for 4 years .. then moved on to a professional role within RIM for a little over 1 year.

Working in the professional role at RIM was much different... I was treated much better... but learned fast how unorganized this company is... how they will hand out a senior management job to anyone .. regardless if they qualified to do the job or not.

I witnessed some very disturbing acts at RIM. I witnessed 2 professionals lose their jobs simply because they had a workplace relationship ( which was kept very discreet an did not affect their job ). . However the same person that fired them .. was having a workplace relationship with her boss. Ofcourse they were not fired and nothing was ever done about their relationship because at RIM if you are in a senior position you have immunity.

There are many disgusting things happening inside of this company .. that is why I chose to leave. It is the BEST decision I ever made.

I am paid much more .. I work for a company now that I respect.

Advice to Senior Management

Treat everyone as an equal ... stop handing out management jobs to the wrong people. Listen to your employees .. care about your employees... karma will always come around full circle.

Goodbye and good riddens.

VP ends up in a relationship with a Director of the same department ..... Director changes departments... VP Retires... This is what is acceptable for SENIOR level employees of RIM... hard to believe that someone that was very hard working and honest that reported to these two was involved in a workplace relationship that didn't affect their job..well .. they were fired. Its disgusting. What goes around comes around .. these people know who they are and karma is a b****.

If you worked in mfg, then you will notice that almost everyone in mfg at a director or higher position is Scottish, or has a strong Scottish history. Only strong Scott's get promoted from within. No offense to any one Scottish - but its unbelievable how such practice continues unabated. This does of course lead to a strong buddy-buddy system which allows transgressions like the above to occur.

RIM does offer a relatively clean work environment without heavy lifting for many unskilled people who otherwise could not work or work in a dirty sweaty factory. The work environment on the floor is typical of any cost sensitive type factory, I have seen much worse.

Other areas of the company are hit and miss, depend on where you work and who you work for. Managers have a lot of leeway and can make life heaven or hell. My current role (outside of mfg) is great, my manager is great and I get to work with a lot of good people.
