Pros

It's a company with a Social and Environmental conscience - you actually feel good about what you do.

The company has a well structured system of bonuses, based on both company and personal performance. The ratings given are reviewed throughout the year, with one to one meetings with line managers being well enforced. The directors of the company write internal blogs to keep everyon informed of what's happening, and the internal intranet portal is updated daily with what's going on.

You can generally get the training you need, and there's no problem with getting books etc. There's a general buzz about doing new stuff, and there are reward schemes for introducing cool new products or business processes.

The directors have regular lunches with a small group of staff, ensuring that people can air any issues - this encourages really open communication, as managers know that staff will have the opportunity to talk right to the top.

Customer care is king - everyone is targetted on getting good customer feedback, and the customer satisfaction average is constantly updated.

Cons

The company is a bit too compartmentalised - always trying to allocate work done to cost centres and budgets can get in the way of delivering good customer care.

There have been issues with old equipment, especially in the helpdesk roles, but this has begun to be addressed in the last year.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do more to get the divisions of the company working together for the sake of the common gain, rather than constantly trying to cross charge everything!!

    Pros

RM sells educational software and content to schools of all ages across the globe and thus they have a wide variety of products which use many different technologies - in other words, you can gain a lot of experience in a short amount of time.

Your colleagues will usually be very capable in their job, and you're unlikely to have a problem with someone not doing what is expected of them. In fact most people will go out of their way to complete a project.

RM also likes to award its employers with various non work related outings, such as Ferrari racing day, ice karting or a simpler meal at a restaurant. They also organise a outdoor party once a year with fair ground rides, music, food and the odd drink.

RM also works very hard to reduce its carbon footprint.

    Cons

You may find yourself stuck constantly maintaining old programs, with little or no documentation on how to proceed, and you may need to switch back and forward between projects at the drop of the hat.

If you aren't interested in Line Management then your options for career progression are limited, it seems if you have never do line management then you aren't capable to do any type of management. However, if you are lucky enough to be in management then your opinion seems to carry more weight than someone else with more experience.

Professional progression is easier, people are encouraged to go on courses but unfortunately this is of low priority and usual never quite comes about.

The company also seems unable to be unable to trust its employees. Project server is used to record progress on projects although this must always add up to your full working hours regardless of overtime you've spent and seems more like a way to keep an eye on you. Also, the internet is heavily filtered, usually to the same level as exists in primary schools as it uses exactly the same system, so expect to be stopped from visiting some website on a daily basis.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to trust your employees more. Sometimes the best ideas come from bottom. Having fun at work is not necessarily a bad thing.
