I have been working at Rackspace full-time (less than an year)

Pros

There is ample room for personal growth as an Admin. Additionally, there are ample resources and some of the best Admins in the industry.

Cons

Some of the culture seems to be shifting from what it once was. This appears (at least to those I work with, myself included) due to pressure to conform to the Corporate environment we function in daily.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't let the culture die and don't try to mask changes. One of the core values is TRANSPARENCY, let us not forget this.

    Some excellent managers
    Excellent Core Values
    Pretty laid back
    Food trucks!!!
    Lots of open source
    Flexible focus of work
    Business is improving slowly

    Cons

Upper management is often very political
    Core Values are rarely followed
The really, really bad Rackers are not fired when they should be
Tends to make managers out of people with no managerial experience at all
    Departments nickle and dime eachother
    Too many layers of management
Rackspace culture gets worse and worse as time goes on

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut out two layers of management
Consider Core Values in everything you do. They're plastered everywhere, yet you still ignore most of them!
Focus Rackspace on what we do best and strip out the rest

I have been working at Rackspace full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Very casual environment where people foster collaboration. It's easy to make friends, and there are lots of opportunities to volunteer in the community. They also have a Recreational Center which is free to employees, with spinning, aerobic and crossfit classes. Vendors are on site serving food each day, so makes it easy for employees at lunch time.

    Cons

The time off and medical benefits are decent and competitive with the market. Work life balance is encouraged, but not always followed well because the overwhelming amount of work which needs to be accomplished, and at the pace leadership wants. My usual work week is 50 hours. There is also CONSTANT change - reorganizations, reprioritizing of goals, etc. Change fatigue is high, and if you are not a flexible person, this is not the place for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in the tools employees need to do their jobs well (such as stable development, testing and preprod environments), as well as allow time for employees to develop products and programs right, and with quality. It also helps to avoid burnout of employees.
