It's still great despite losing some of the culture that made it special.

I have been working at Rackspace

Pros

Excellent work/life balance.
Talented Rackers are recognized and developed quickly.
Management is mostly receptive to ideas.
There's a lot of flexibility in career pathing.
It's a generally friendly and respectful environment.

Cons

The company has had growing pains which have stifled some of the culture and innovation.
Management is slow to get rid of low-performing Rackers, which causes a drain on morale for high-performers.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

In order for the company to flourish long-term, it has to be more agile. Automation should be priority number one.

Middle Management needs to be more decisive and start cutting the dead weight employees. It causes disengagement for the people that actually care when there is no discipline for repeated underperformance.

Great support engineers, visionary and gutsy management, worthless and backstabbing middle management

    I worked at Rackspace

    Pros

Good culture, lots of skilled and cool coworkers who generally like to share information, senior management with vision and guts that still care about their employees and the community in which they do business in.

    Cons

Lots of cronyism in legacy organizations that don't really contribute to the company's bottom line profits. Although the desire to eliminate departmental silos is admirable, much of previous commentary on glassdoor holds true in the sense that a "Lord of the Flies" mentality supercedes attempts at establishing proper processes and procedures. The latter is almost mandatory on the support floor to maintain sanity in the face of staffing policies that mainly benefit the bottom-line profits of share-holding executives. Ultimately these are typical growing pains of a company wishing desperately to be a truly global service company but being directly in the face of unnecessary politics, I can attest to factionalism standing directly in opposition to what could otherwise be a truly flourishing company. "Dirtypoint" quite fairly sums it up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the worthless deadweight middle-management (it should be clear who they are.) Spend the liberated cash on employees who really count, who are there not to sit in 4-hour long meetings about decisions that could be made in a matter of minutes but instead to provide Fanatical Support to internal and external customers alike. I really believed in the vision of Rackspace but unfortunately I was not able to tolerate the underhanded and dirty behavior of my manager and their cohorts and immediate superiors.

I have been working at Rackspace

    Pros

Working here is like working with a big extended family. Everyone treats you with respect and concern. If you need any help or advice, your teammates are always there for you.

    Cons

The pay could always be higher. Everyone thinks that wherever they work. I do feel that Rackspace is a little below the average though.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Yes, your Rackers are the source of your Fanatical Support. We are the secret sauce! The salary pool could use a pretty hefty increase. Not only to hire more people, but to allow for promotions and pay increases for your seasoned Rackers!
