I have been working at Radio One full-time (More than 3 years)

Pros

Meeting celebrities, the opportunity to network and the relaxed environment

Cons

Little to no room for growth, no raises, not family friendly, they treat you like a number instead of a valued employee even when you give outstanding service, they expect you to choose your job over any other aspect of your life. They have no understanding when it comes to your own family. They also hardly ever give raises and when you do receive one, it's literally pennies every 3 to 4 years. It's nearly impossible to keep up with the rise in the economy with this company.

Advice to Management

Ask your employees what you can do to improve their work experience and provide it, within reason. If you have good, hard working and trust worthy employees don't run them into the arms of another company by making them feel like a number and allow your employees to flourish and grow. Train current employees if they apply for a position instead of hiring externally.

Extremely negative environment and lack of passion.

    Pros

Extremely casual workplace. You can wear almost anything and some do. There are a few good people here and you might get lucky to work with them but unfortunately their hands are tied with bureaucracy and you will be left with nothing but lip service.

    Cons

Extremely unprofessional, expect no merit pay raises no matter how well your job is performed. They may promise you a raise to keep you quiet but in the end you will not see one due to "budget constraints". Extreme lack of passion and apathy from most employees. Constant budget cuts and incomprehensible hires will continue the downward spiral.

    Advice to Management

When you ask us to fill out one of those employee surveys, listen to the results and make positive changes.

Most fun I've ever had at a job, despite terrible pay and incompetent management.

I worked at Radio One part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Always meeting new people, always something different everyday, felt like a mini-celebrity. Co-workers were great, creative, out-going people.

    Cons

Pay was horrible; management was short-sighted, refusal to try something new and flat out incompetent. You have to be family, a friend, or a serious ass-kisser to get ahead at this company.

    Advice to Management

Think outside of the box; radio is a fracturing medium...in saying that, there is still room to carve out your own niche and audience. Stop doing the same thing that worked 25 years ago...
